Sweet Wormwood – Artemisia annua scientific background

Therapeutic treatments using Artemisia annua have a long tradition in the management of various diseases, due to its antibacterial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. However, most reports concerning the toxic effects of Artemisia annua extracts have been based on conventional maceration methods. In the present study, an innovative extraction process based on pressurized cyclic solid-liquid (PCSL) extraction from Artemisia annua was developed, resulting in a new phytocomplex with enhanced anticancer properties. This extraction method generated a pressure gradient through cycles of compression and decompression, enabling direct extraction without maceration. The toxic effects of the Artemisia annua PCSL extract were tested on various cells, including three cancer cell lines. The results clearly showed that exposure of human, mouse, and canine cancer cells to serial dilutions of the PCSL extract produced greater toxicity and stronger apoptosis-inducing activity than exposure to maceration-derived Artemisia extracts. The collected data suggest that the Artemisia annua PCSL extract could be a promising and cost-effective new therapeutic tool for the treatment of human and animal tumors.
